After graduating Lees McCrae College, Mitch started working at Alpine Ski Center in the rental department in Banner Elk, NC. After one year he became the assistant manager and began working and buying for the soft goods division. After his first trip to the SIA show Mitch decided that he wanted to become a rep and was fortunate enough to acquire the lines of Spalding skis and Caber boots. During the lean summer months Mitch ran my families farming operation which helped fund the winter travel expenses.
Soon after, he became the rep for Atomic skis and Serac clothing. The following year Peter Clifford and Mitch formed Chilton & Clifford Assocs. They added Allen-A, Lange, Marker, O’Neill, Croakies and Thule to our existing lines. At this point Mitch said good-bye to my farming days. Two year later they merged with Southeastern sales in Greensboro, NC to become the largest rep agency in the south. This partnership lasted about five years and included lines outside of winter sports industry such as Asics, Oakley, Reebok, Boast, Arena Swimwear, Yonnex Tennis, Rossignol Ski and Tennis.
When the group separated Mitch became the sole sales rep for Rossignol and have enjoyed a long and fulfilling relationship with them ever since.
“I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the most amazing athletes and professional business people through the years and credit my association with the ski industry for all the advantages I have had as such. But though the many ups and downs, twists and turns that life may bring, without the love and support of my wife Kristina and my three sons it would not have been as rewarding or even possible to have had the achievement and success I have enjoyed.”
