Upgrade the Slopes With the Year’s Top Ski Tech – Popular Mechanics

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

By: Popular Mechanics
February 13, 2013

From exceedingly lightweight insulating layers to helmets designed with soft exteriors that actually flex (to absorb impact), to a combined combination ski-and-snowboard boot, you won’t see more innovation this side of CES than here at the SnowSports Industries America trade show. So while winter grows increasingly fickle, the gear for sliding down resorts is growing ever more clever and creative. Here’s a look at several cool items we found walking around Denver this week.

Salomon Flexcell Protection Vest
Price:
$149-$179

Why it’s Cool:Because if there’s one area where you’ll see major innovations at a ski show, it’s in protection. With the X-Games showing 15-year-olds how to launch huge air (and they’re actually trying those tricks), protective tech must keep pace, so companies are borrowing from sports like motorcycling that have reputation for high risk.

January 30, 2013

JOIN US AT THE COLORADO CONVENTION CENTER, FEBRUARY 1, 2013, 11-7, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SIA SNOW SHOW

What began as a mid-winter confab for MTRiP subscribers has quickly morphed into The ASSEMBLY, a one- day gathering of stakeholders in year-round mountain tourism and the economic foundation upon which the industry’s future will be constructed. The agenda is designed to provide “what you ought to know…” in order to better market and operate a mountain resort or related tourism-dependent business. Presentations will be developed and led by recognized industry leaders, using an interactive format and participation from among more than 40 Affiliate Partners. Part fact base, part roundtable, The ASSEMBLY is a unique approach to data-based decision-making in a collaborative environment. The future ‑ we think – is outside the box of historical convention, and so is The ASSEMBLY.

MTRiP Subscribers and invited guests of the Affiliated Partners are being invited to attend, sitting in in on the discussion in “listen-only” mode from the audience. Participation is limited, subject to available space.

AGENDA:  Feb. 1, 2013 at the Colorado Convention Center

  1. 11:00 a.m. Mid-Winter Market Update/Seasonal Assessment: The 2012-13 winter season will be the subject of a 360-degree assessment, including a mid-season update, outlook-forecast for season’s end, and observations about lessons and legacies. The result; an informed summation from which strategic decisions can be made about current year outcomes and future season planning. Presentations from senior research analysts at MTRiP, RRC Associates and Snow Sports Industries of America (SIA) will be followed by interpretation and insights from Melanie Mills, President & CEO of Colorado Ski Country, Nathan Rafferty, President & CEO of Ski Utah and Michael Berry, President of the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA).
  2. II.             12:15 p.m. SIA Snow Show: Included is a rare one-day badge to the Snow Show- the world’s largest alpine equipment and apparel trade show featuring the suppliers of the ‘toys’ that power our shared passion for mountain travel. Note: This is the primary equipment-apparel buying show for the winter sports industry and participants are completely focused on conducting business, so please attend only as an observer. Lunch on your own from several choices on the show floor.
  3. III.          2:30 p.m. The Foundation for the Future: Part situation assessment, part S.W.O.T. analysis, presenters from Affiliate Partners will look beyond the 2012-13 season and present strategic building blocks for next year’s planning. These individuals will address “what you ought to know…” as a foundation for developing your plan, followed by a roundtable discussion among Affiliate Partners.  Moderator: Nate Fristoe, RRC Associates. Wrap-up by Bill Jensen of Intrawest.
  4. 4:15 p.m. Destination Summer- Key to Diversification: Once the off-season for many mountain towns, we must now acknowledge destination mountain-summer in its own right. This discussion will present a fact base, highlight opportunities and showcase examples that are leading the way for diversification of the mountain economy. The format; a sequential mini-case study presentation, providing outstanding examples and anecdotal discussions from Affiliate Partners. Moderator: Ralf Garrison, MTRiP. Wrap-up by Al White of Colorado Tourism Office.
  5. V.           5:30 p.m. Networking Reception: To end the day, we will host a networking reception with “so, now what…” conversation, best addressed with an adult beverage.

SIA Collaborates with K.I.D.S. to Collect Winter Clothes for Children Affected by Hurricane Sandy

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

By: SIA
January 22, 2013

Apparel donations from retailers, manufacturers and suppliers will be distributed by K.I.D.S. to children in New Jersey and New York

SnowSports Industries America (SIA) is organizing children’s winter apparel donations for the New York City-based charity Kids in Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) to help children in New Jersey and New York still suffering from the storm’s impact three months later.

For efficiency, retailers, manufacturers and suppliers can participate in SIA and K.I.D.S. New Year, New Start Sandy Relief Drive by sending new merchandise to the Global Experience Specialists (GES)-sponsored donation center in Denver, Colo. between January 21 and February 21. They can also drop off their donations on site during the SIA Snow Show at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colo. (Jan. 31–Feb. 4).

Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, injured hundreds of people and damaged more than $60 billion in property across the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeastern regions of the United States. Many who have returned home are still without the clothing and personal items that were lost in the storm.

“Even though three months have passed, there are still huge post-storm needs to be met, particularly for kids still without the winter necessities,” said Tom McGann, president and CEO of Spyder, the company that spearheaded the New Year, New Start Sandy Relief. “Collecting new winter apparel for them will be a great way for the industry to use its unique resources to impact the lives of these children.”

The snow sports industry has been contributing to the Hurricane Sandy relief effort in various ways since the storm hit. The Snow Sports Sandy Relief Hub Facebook group, for instance, has connected snow sports industry professionals who want to support the affected communities. Kerry O’Flaherty, vice president of Eastern Winter Sports Rep Association, is one of many who have dedicated time to the relief effort.

“I’ve been out volunteering every weekend, and it’s incredible how many people still need a lot of help,” O’Flaherty said. “There are some towns on the south shore of Long Island and on the Jersey Shore where the whole infrastructure is gone. You can’t even get in there. Many people have lost everything.”

The K.I.D.S. donation program at SIA Snow Show is an efficient way for the entire industry to help with the Hurricane Sandy relief effort. Apparel and financial donations of any size are welcome. “No donation is too small when we work together,” said SIA President David Ingemie.

Denver’s Colorado Convention Center First in the World to Earn New Green Certification

Friday, December 28th, 2012

Trade Show Executive
December 28, 2012

Denver, CO – The U.S. green meetings industry entered new territory in December when the Colorado Convention Center (CCC) in Denver became the first such venue in the world to receive Level One certification for a rigorous new standard unveiled earlier this year.

ATSM International, an accredited standards-development organization, specifically awarded the CCC certification in The Evaluation and Selection of Venues for Environmentally Sustainable Meetings, Events, Trade Shows, and Conferences (E2774-11).

“We are proud to take a leadership position in advancing a positive environmental and social agenda for the event industry,” said John Adams, regional vice president of SMG and general manager of the CCC. “Being the first venue to be certified to the new standard is clear evidence of our commitment.”

The E2774-11 standard for venue selection is one of nine international standards developed by the meetings and events industry for sustainable meetings and trade shows. The standard spells out exactly what planners and show organizers need to look for in order to select a venue that is as green as possible.

The protocol required to meet the new standard was developed for ATSM International by iCompli, a division of the independent auditing firm BPA International. BPA also performed the third-party certification of the CCC’s compliance with the standard.

The Guide continues to offer better engagement for the snowboard industry, and more specifically, core snowboard retailers, with pertinent show details including new trends, up-to-date research, feature articles, travel tips, and more.

The Guide is designed not only as a sneak peek of next year’s gear and a forum for issues facing the snowboard industry, but it is also a personal travel guide for retailers coming out to the show,” says TransWorld Business Editor in Chief Mike Lewis. “SIA is where next season begins for retailers, and our goal is to ensure they get the most out of the show. Partnering with SIA once again on The Guide was a great opportunity to share ideas and insights with the specialty retailers who are the foundation of the sport.”

The custom publication, featuring 20 pages of highly informative snowboard industry content, will be distributed both in print and digitally to over 30,000 snowboard shops, manufacturers, executives, and SIA members prior to the show, which runs from January 31 through February 3 in Denver, Colorado, and February 4–5 in Winter Park, Colorado. The digital edition will be available online at siasnowshow.com and transworldbusiness.com via a browser-based reader, and additionally, on its own application for the iPad, through TransWorld’s proprietary iPad magazine platform, and downloadable at no cost to the consumer. Hard copies will also be available on-site at the SIA Snow Show.

“This time of year we realize the entire industry has so much going that we try to provide tools for getting the most out of their SIA Snow Show experience,” comments SIA President David Ingemie. “The Guide is one of those tools that gives a great picture of what’s on tap for the Show, so you don’t miss a thing.”
