Rome Snowboards
Crew taking full advantage of opening day

“Riding was awesome! Good crowds, lots of excitement and major snowmaking going on. The Rome Snowboard Crew showed up and we all rode and BBQ’d late into the day. We may have had a few adult beverages to kick off the season! Darkside Snowboard Shop had a vibe going on all day, people in and out, picking up forgotten items; outerwear, jackets and pants, many goggles, and a few boots and boards. Sweet day!” – Mark Bradsell, Manager, Darkside Snowboard Shop

“Everyone coming through the store today has been telling me how awesome it is out there. Snow is being blown, there’s nice packed powder forming and epic lines can be found on the mountain. Temperatures are already dropping and we know it’s going to be a great season. You can absolutely find me riding tomorrow!”  – Rick Gaspar, Aspen East, Killington, VT

Jim Spring, Retail Tracking Pioneer and Founder of Leisure Trends Group, Passes Away

October 23, 2012

Leisure Trends Group (LTG) mourns the loss of its founder and longtime leader Jim Spring.  Jim, who passed away early Monday morning, founded LTG in 1989, and over the past 23 years developed and led the company from its infancy to the fast growing, highly respected company it is today serving the sporting goods and specialty retail industries.

Jim was fondly known as “the smartest man in the specialty retail business”.  He passed away while battling throat cancer at the age of 75.  With a career spanning 50 years, he was universally respected for his business acumen, keen retail wisdom, honesty and humor (and most of all, one of the greatest belly-chuckles the world has ever known!) all of which Jim freely shared with employees, peers and the sports industry through untold articles, columns and speeches.

Starting his career as the Executive Editor of SKI magazine, Jim authored three books on retail management and the use of statistical information.  He also created the concept of segmenting Americans by their leisure time activities and their attitudes towards those activities.  Proclaimed by his peers as a “retail genius” and a tireless champion of the specialty retailer, Jim pioneered retail sales tracking with breakthroughs including the first working universal vendor code and the use of data captured at point-of-sale in retail stores.  Jim created this method of tracking sales through his first company, SMART, eventually selling the company to NPD.  Following SMART, Jim started Leisure Trends Group and eventually completed his career as owner and Chairman, mentor and friend, to the company’s nearly 50 person team.

Jim founded and ran Leisure Trends with his wife, Joy Spring, until 2010, when they retired from the day-to-day activities to lead LTG’s board of directors.

Jim is survived by his wife of 22 years, Joy Spring, and his three children, James Wright Spring, Elizabeth Hayden Spring and Thomas Cody Clarke Spring, his wife Laura, and 2 grandchildren, Sophia and Maxwell Spring.

Memorial arrangements and additional details to be forthcoming.

It’s Officially Ski & Snowboard Season Here in Colorado!

Arapahoe Basin opened this morning

At 9:00am this morning Arapahoe Basin opened its Black Mountain Express lift servicing some intermediate terrain. They are reporting a 19 inch mid-mountain base with 1 inch of snow falling in the past 24 hours. A few hundred people were on hand to make first turns.

“Pent up demand” have been the catch words this Fall, it really hasn’t mattered if I’ve been speaking to retailers, SIA member companies or a few friends working the resort side of the business. The Labor Day sales were all strong here in the Rockies. Merchandise was moving especially boots; snowboard and ski. The other thing in listening to consumers they were happy that products were mostly last season’s vs. 2 / 3 seasons old and discounts were in the 60% range on average. Winter 2010/11 helped clean out the pipeline as we all know.  I haven’t been to any of the sales in the mid-west but a few of the reps are telling me sales have been positive and over the Columbus Day weekend they were pleased with what the retailers were saying.

My resort friends are telling me that last year’s dismal performance is behind them a number have invested in on hill improvements and are looking forward to the season with optimism. All over the Rockies new lifts have been going in. Let’s have a party! Here in my home state 2012-13 marks anniversaries for several mountains; Steamboat, Vail and Eldora turn 50 and Loveland celebrates its 75th anniversary. Look for specials nationwide.

Even though Killington isn’t in my territory one of my members was doing a loop back east in VT last week and was at the resort. Killington did a great promotion, they welcomed season pass and express card holders back to the slopes for an exclusive day of early season skiing and riding on Saturday, October 13 with the snow making crew; great way to get the loyal customer out on the hill.

So it’s now ski & snowboard season, keep your fingers cross for more snow in the high country and we’ll see you on the slopes.

SIA’s @edawray Remembers Tom Sims

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

SIA Eastern US & Canada Sales and Marketing Manager
September 20, 2012

Today, September 12th, 2012, was a day filled with great sadness and happiness.  The passing of Tom Sims is so sad; we’ve lost a true legend.  Tom gave me a chance to be one of his sales reps.  I knew a little about snowboarding  at the time and was a terrible rider.  But he taught me a lot about board construction and design. I soaked up every bit of it.  It helped make me a better sales rep.

Selling Sims boards in Burton territory definitely made my job tougher and the Burton guys certainly weren’t going to make it easier; after all “Sims were western boards” as one rep put it to me.  But I really think deep down that Tom helped Jake and Jake helped Tom.  They both pushed each other to further our sport.  We all know about the “rivalry” between the brands and the signing of Craig Kelly, but take that away and you have two guys that truly loved what they were doing.

Today I reconnected with other Sims reps from back in the day.  We were all consoling each other over texts, Facebook and emails.  It was so nice to hear from these guys again.  I was telling my son Tucker some of the great times we had together with Tom.  The sales meeting trips to Whistler, Panorama, Heli-boarding, Breckenridge all great memories.  But one story stood out how Tom literally took a $20,000 Rolex off Jamie Salter’s wrist to pay off a debt, priceless.

Tom you will be greatly missed and left us way too soon.  My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Winter Sports Retailers Take Pragmatic Yet Optimistic Approach to Upcoming Season

Retail Survey Reveals Lower Preseason Orders Combined with Positive Outlook

Boulder, CO (September, 13, 2012) With new snow dusting the Rockies and Labor Day weekend sales now behind us, focus is quickly turning to the upcoming winter sports selling season.  Results of a new retail survey conducted by Leisure Trends Group reveal the fallout from last season’s “winter that wasn’t,” but no panic in the retail community.  Faced with an overabundance of leftover inventory, retailers reduced preseason orders sharply.  However, they remain optimistic about the upcoming season and are trying to hold prices as they sell through their existing stocks.

Drawn from a sample of 44 responses among outdoor and winter sports retailers*, the survey shows the impact of leftover inventory from the 2011/2012 season.  Sixty-four percent of responding retailers report decreasing their preseason orders compared to last season, with 20% dropping them by 26% or more.  “Given last winter’s poor sales and mounting inventory levels as the warm, dry winter wore on, this drop was expected,” states Jim Kelley, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Leisure Trends Group.  “The key question is whether there will be enough product to meet demand if more normal snowfall and cold temperatures return.”

Overall, retailers are optimistic about the upcoming season with over 70% indicating that they expect sales to be better this year than last.  While this may not seem like a stretch given last year’s anemic performance, 50% of responding retailers report Labor Day weekend sales above last year’s levels with only 26% reporting lower sales.  This early season comparison is important as it takes place before the impact of warm temperatures and little snow was felt last winter.

Just as importantly, retailers are holding prices on carryover inventory rather than dumping it at deeply discounted prices.  For their Labor Day weekend sales, the majority of retailers report pricing carryover inventory about the same as it was priced last Labor Day weekend.

On a cautionary note, Kelley warns that the reduced preseason orders could lead to inventory shortages should Mother Nature deliver this winter. “That’s why we’re not seeing deep discounting early in the season.  With preseason orders down, retailers know at-once deliveries will be limited.  They want healthy margins and enough product to carry them through the season.  With the right balance, they can put themselves in position to move past the struggles of last year and place strong buys moving forward.”

* Results drawn from a base of 44 respondents should be considered directional in nature
