SIA Exhibitors: Be Aware of Fair Guide/Expo Guide Exhibitor Scams

It has recently come to our attention that Expo Guide S de RL de CV of Mexico (aka the Fair Guide, product of Construct Data Partners, Slovakia) has once again been targeting SIA Members/Exhibitors requesting company data updates for an online directory. They are specifically mentioning the SIA Show. In addition Expo Guide is asking for a three-year advertisement commitment of $1,571 or more. DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS SOLICITATION!

By using a form similar to a Show organizer’s free catalog listing with SIA’s name, this group is offering advertising space on their Fair Guide (www.fairguide.com) and/or Expo Guide (www.expo-guide.com) websites. If an exhibitor signs the advertising agreement, they can be locked into a non-terminable contract at a significant cost. If you receive a document with SIA or SIA’s Show name on it, please read through it carefully to confirm it is not a scam.

SIA does not have a partner agreement or relationship with Construct Data Verlag AG, Commercial Online Manuals S de RL de CV, Fair Guide, Expo Guide nor any of their other brands.

Please be aware of this scam and others. If you have heard of other scams, please contact SIA right away. The site, www.stopecg.org, does have information on Expo Guide and other misleading scams.

Debbie Brown Des Roches, Director of Trade Show, Wraps up 2012 SIA Snow Show

I really can’t believe that the 2012 SIA Snow Show and On-Snow Demo is history and we are already making plans for our 2013 Show.

Believe it or not we have our first “deadline” coming up for the 2013 show—March 15 for all of last year’s exhibitor to turn in their space requests.  It seems early, but we really need this information to begin planning the trade Show floor to see who needs to grow their space, who needs to reduce their space, and the ones we really don’t like to see are the space requests indicating that a company is not coming back—usually not too many of those, thank goodness.  But these initial forms are what allow us to begin the “jigsaw” puzzle of the trade show floor.  And hopefully, with enough notice, we are able to meet the needs of most of the exhibitors—note the word, most!  Would love to be able to say we can do accomplish 100% of the requests—but usually, there will be a handful that we just can’t do exactly what is requested.

In addition, to our first deadline—we are using this time to review our trade Show survey results—to see what the exhibitors and attendees would like to see improved for the Show next year.  We really appreciate everyone who takes the time to fill out the survey—believe me, we do pay attention to what is said!  If it is something that we can do to make a change, we put it on our list!  Some things, unfortunately, are out of our control (like the weather!)  Here are some of the EASY things to change for next year:

  • Repeat the seminars at different times, before or after the Show
  • Better booth numbering system
  • Better navigation signage
  • More seating for eating

Of course, there are many, many more suggestions and we will be reviewing them all and making the changes that are in our control.  And if you ever have any ideas of things that would make your time at the show better, or even time before or after the Show, please let us know any time during the year.  We realize that the Show is a significant investment for all and want to do everything that we can to make it as productive and efficient as possible.

We really do like hearing from everyone, whether it is by phone call, email, facebook or twitter—please let us know anytime you have a suggestion on something SIA can do to make your show more productive!

SnowSports Industries America Trade Show Hints At Next Season’s Ski Gear

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

DENVER — One of the best previews of what snow-sports manufacturers have for next ski season comes at the annual trade show thrown by SnowSports Industries America, whether it’s a new line of skis or off-the-wall inventions like light-up snowboards.

Here’s a look at some of what some of the 900-plus brands at the SIA Snow Show this past week had to offer:

_ CAMERAS – More skiers and snowboarders have been strapping cameras to their torsos or attaching them to helmets to capture action shots. This spring, GoPro will release a Wi-Fi BacPac that attaches to the back of a camera, allowing it to be controlled from a remote control worn on the wrist, or from a smart phone or device. That means kids riding through the halfpipe with cameras on their helmets could have their parents or buddies on the sidelines choosing when to snap the best shot.

_ NIGHT RIDER – Glowboardz LLC has embedded lights in the bottom of snowboards so they light up the snow when you ride at night. It’s patented.

_ AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS – Skilogik has gotten attention for its artwork done not with paint or inks but by using different types of wood. The young company has won awards for their skis’ performance so that company founder David Mazzarella is proud to say his products – with art designed by his wife, Mariella – ski as good as they look. For next winter, Skilogik debuts the Spinster terrain park ski with thicker edges along the edges under the foot for riding rails. The lightweight tips are designed to make it easier to spin. SIA lists Skilogik as among the top five brands with the highest growth in the last year.

SIA 2012 Highlights from Shayboarder.com

February 1, 2012

It’s pretty amazing to attend the SIA Tradeshow each year. It really boils down to a great experience because of the people you meet who run the industry, the products that come out after years of hard work and the amount of fun each night at the parties. By the time the on-snow rolls around, you finally get to take laps with your friends and really judge the products on the snow where they are meant to be ridden. This year was 4 days inside and 2 days outside on the snow, 6 days of a lot of hard work for Shayboarder.com. It’s really rad to meet everyone who supports Shayboarder.com and feel part of this industry.

Over the next couple months, you’ll see 4 days of SIA in product write-ups that dive into each company and the products they have created for 2013. I’ve been really impressed with the level of tech and new ideas coming out this year. It was a great show to be at and the products speak for themselves. I made sure to meet with the brands you are interested in (and try my best to meet with everyone). I’ll be posting up the reviews on the gear I rode at the on-snow starting in the next couple days. But just remember, winter is still here and enjoy it.

So many faces, new and old at SIA. This is really my favorite highlight is being able to catch up with new and old friends at the show. The first year I attended SIA, I only knew maybe 5 people there. Now I can walk around and run into tons of people to hug and chat with. It’s an experience that gets better each year I come out for SIA.

Meeting Terry Kidwell at the show then hanging out with him and Joel Gomez at the Riders Poll later on that night. It’s really amazing to meet the snowboarders that have brought us to our level of passion. I wouldn’t be where I am, have this blog or any of the amazing snowboarding experiences if it wasn’t for the snowboarding legends like Terry Kidwell.
Getting in the SPY RV to travel to the Riders Poll for a pre-party. Huge thanks to Charlie for the invite. We ended up having a blast, getting our drink on and catching up with a lot of people before the Riders Poll. By the time the Riders Poll hit, hanging out with Trent and watching Jess Kimura take home three Riders Poll Awards.

New technology. It’s great to see the assortment of ideas coming out at this SIA show. The Flow Rush snowboard with the implant dampening, the NOW bindings from JF and the new highback from Burton snowboards. It’s great to see that even though snowboarding has come so far, that there are still new ideas and technology that are always coming.

Burton’s 1997 Rumors T-Shirt vs. Reality

Friday, January 20th, 2012

January 20, 2012
By: Editors of Boardistan

In 1997 Burton Snowboards was at the nexus of a storm of rumors. The rumors were so pervasive that some clever instigator at the company created an extremely limited edition T-shirt for the 1997 SIA Trade Show in Las Vegas. The shirt jokingly outlined all the outlandish, outrageous things people were saying about the company that season.

Now, 15 years later, we thought it might be interesting to revisit the T-shirt that set out to sarcastically dispel the rumors and see how many of them eventually came true. Follow the jump for the complete rumor breakdown.

1. Burton is going public.

False. Burton is still a privately held company that seems to be doing just fine financing everything from their own reportedly deep pockets. While finance people often wonder about Jake and Donna’s “exit strategy” it would appear that their currently level of involvement in the brand would suggest that they are still interested in keeping all their financial information to themselves for the time being.

2. Burton is going direct.

True. While we always thought it silly that Burton didn’t sell direct as soon as it was technologically possible, they waited until around 2005 to begin selling softgoods direct and didn’t sell snowboards, boot, bindings on their website until the fall of 2009.

3. Burton is making skis, skateboards, wakeboards, and in-line skates next year.

Mostly true. Burton still has not to our knowledge made skis, wakeboards, or in-line skates, however, they do currently own (for a little longer at least) DNA Distribution (Alien Workshop and Habitat Skateboards), they make street wear with Analog, shoes with Gravis and they most certainly are making surfboards as the owner of the surf industry’s leading manufacturer Channel Islands Surfboards. The basis of the rumor was that Burton would expand outside the snowboard market as a way of increasing revenue and in that way the rumor is completely true.

4. Burton sized their bindings down this year so Airwalk boots wouldn’t fit them.

Most likely false. While it could be up for discussion exactly why Burton decided to change the heel cup size of their bindings (their reason was always that they wanted to create a better boot-binding interface), history suggests that Airwalk’s three year run (1993 to 1996) as the number one selling snowboard boot ended shortly after Burton’s binding changes. This is most likely a coincidence as some involved with Airwalk at the time say the company’s failure had absolutely nothing to do with Burton’s bindings and more to do with Airwalk’s loss of focus during their entry into snowboards, outerwear, and step-in bindings.
