The 2012 SIA Snow Show kicked off today at the Denver Convention Center. Tens of thousands have flocked to the Mile High City this week to have a peek at the gear that will be hitting shelves in the fall of 2012. Hard goods, soft goods and everything in between—it’s all here.

Our first day on the floor was a busy one. Between catching up with friends and inspecting the latest gear offerings, we managed to shoot some photos to give you an idea of what’s on display.

A busy SIA got underway Thursday in Denver and despite the disappointing snowfall this season, the mood wasn’t total doom and gloom.

I heard mixed information about how the slow snow year is impacting people. Those retailers that made it out of the recession tend to be some of the stronger operators, who plan conservatively and know how much Mother Nature plays a part in snow sales.

Manufacturers have scaled back production and don’t have as much excess inventory they need to dump. And, so far there does not seem to be mass discounting going on, though many believe that may hit fairly soon. The line I heard over and over is “nobody is panicking – yet.”

I did hear from several manufacturers that orders for the season they are showing at the show may be impacted by the slow season this year. Some brands had credit managers on hand to deal with customers struggling to pay the bills this season. Also, negotiations are reportedly underway with larger retailers about what to do with their excess inventory, several people told me, and markdown dollars are a hot topic.

However, some people painted a grimmer picture, and expect there to be some retail and manufacturer casualties after this season.

Given the lack of snowfall – snow cover in the U.S. was 50% lower in December 2011 than December 2010 – SIA reported some relatively good news yesterday. Sales through December reached $2.2 billion, 2% below last season’s record sales but above August – December sales in the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 seasons.

Tough categories included goggles, wax and gloves, while apparel and equipment sales fared a bit better.

Specialty store inventories were up 16% overall during this timeframe.

Burton’s 1997 Rumors T-Shirt vs. Reality

Friday, January 20th, 2012

January 20, 2012
By: Editors of Boardistan

In 1997 Burton Snowboards was at the nexus of a storm of rumors. The rumors were so pervasive that some clever instigator at the company created an extremely limited edition T-shirt for the 1997 SIA Trade Show in Las Vegas. The shirt jokingly outlined all the outlandish, outrageous things people were saying about the company that season.

Now, 15 years later, we thought it might be interesting to revisit the T-shirt that set out to sarcastically dispel the rumors and see how many of them eventually came true. Follow the jump for the complete rumor breakdown.

1. Burton is going public.

False. Burton is still a privately held company that seems to be doing just fine financing everything from their own reportedly deep pockets. While finance people often wonder about Jake and Donna’s “exit strategy” it would appear that their currently level of involvement in the brand would suggest that they are still interested in keeping all their financial information to themselves for the time being.

2. Burton is going direct.

True. While we always thought it silly that Burton didn’t sell direct as soon as it was technologically possible, they waited until around 2005 to begin selling softgoods direct and didn’t sell snowboards, boot, bindings on their website until the fall of 2009.

3. Burton is making skis, skateboards, wakeboards, and in-line skates next year.

Mostly true. Burton still has not to our knowledge made skis, wakeboards, or in-line skates, however, they do currently own (for a little longer at least) DNA Distribution (Alien Workshop and Habitat Skateboards), they make street wear with Analog, shoes with Gravis and they most certainly are making surfboards as the owner of the surf industry’s leading manufacturer Channel Islands Surfboards. The basis of the rumor was that Burton would expand outside the snowboard market as a way of increasing revenue and in that way the rumor is completely true.

4. Burton sized their bindings down this year so Airwalk boots wouldn’t fit them.

Most likely false. While it could be up for discussion exactly why Burton decided to change the heel cup size of their bindings (their reason was always that they wanted to create a better boot-binding interface), history suggests that Airwalk’s three year run (1993 to 1996) as the number one selling snowboard boot ended shortly after Burton’s binding changes. This is most likely a coincidence as some involved with Airwalk at the time say the company’s failure had absolutely nothing to do with Burton’s bindings and more to do with Airwalk’s loss of focus during their entry into snowboards, outerwear, and step-in bindings.

GNU Debuts New Board At SIA Snow Show

Monday, January 9th, 2012

January 9, 2012

GNU has launched a new board, the Impossible Asym Sym Sync Pickle, which centers around the concept of balance through asymmetry, combined with Mervin Mfg’s latest technological innovations. The board, which will debut at the SIA Snow Show January 26-29 in Denver, Colorado, is set to hit retailers in Septebmer 2012. The details from GNU follow:

Seattle, WA (January 5, 2012) – GNU re-evolutionizes snowboarding with the most technologically advanced snowboard ever, the new GNU Impossible Asym. Sym. Sync. Pickle, arriving in stores in September 2012. Balance through asymmetry is taken to the next level, with the Impossible’s new asymmetry for ducks, which is then combined with Mervin Mfg’s latest and greatest technological innovations. Customized core construction, sidecuts and contact angles are designed to allow the body and board to synchronize into perfect harmony through nearly “imperceptible perfection.”

In addition to Asym Sym Sync, elliptical EC2 camber/banana with Magne-tration underfoot creates a fun, all-mountain ride. Impossibly strong, ultra-lightweight magnesium fiber, rugged Bio Beans topsheet material, glow in the dark sidewalls, lightweight Columbian Gold eco wood core and a sintered base combine are brought together in the Gnu Impossible for the most technologically advanced snowboard being built today.

Asym Sym Sync is designed with the body’s asymmetry front to back, but symmetry side-to-side in mind. Snowboard turn mechanics are completely different on your toe side than on your heel side. The Duck Asym of the Asym Sym Sync balances the amount of board contact behind and in front of your feet for stable balanced pop and float.

On the heel side, a shorter contact length allows for turns and reactions with power that are taken at an inherently lower angle. A softer flexing core construction on the heel side allows the board to flex into a tighter arc at a lower angle. On the toe side, anatomically its possible to tip a board up into a very aggressive angle of attack. The Asym Sym Sync’s mellower toe side sidecuts and longer contact are designed to balance this asymmetry creating toe edge stability and a range of turning arcs that align perfectly with the heelside turns. A firmer flexing core on the toe side provides added stability and control necessary with finely tuned toe side turn mechanics.
