Work With Perks: A Look At The Industry’s ‘Best Places To Work’

Outside Magazine recently released its newest incarnation of the ‘Best Places To Work.’ For five years, the mag has sought out companies that encourage a work-life balance in all they do, and for those they employ. Businesses that allow their workers to strive for success, while making time to travel, give back to their families and communities; essentially, companies that make it possible to maintain a full life outside of the office. Outsidebegan this endeavor with just 30 spots to fill, but by 2010 discovered such a vast field of quality companies that it was forced to recognize the top 50. Now, for 2012, the list has extended to encompass 100—an extremely promising trend.

Companies rooted in and supported by the world of action sports made their mark upon this coveted list, a testament to the values and goals of the industry as a whole. Here’s the inside scoop on a few of the companies we were stoked to see make the cut:

#80: Aspen Skiing Company
With 1,200 employees making their homes across the Aspen/Snowmass area— some in ski patrol huts, some in gondola- front offices, the Aspen Skiing Company provides its employees with a full mountain playground, right out the frontdoor.Company bicycles allow for easy transit to meetings or a little ride around town to take a breather. Additionally, the company recently purchased the rights to the regional methane to convert it to electricity, meaning it is offsetting 100 percent of its annual electrical usage.

#88: Bern Unlimited
Bern Unlimited is a tight-knit team of 17, housed in an old mill warehouse next to a tidal river in Kingston, Massachusetts. Skateboards and dogs are a part of the laid-back office atmosphere, and the weekend starts at 3pm on Friday. Throw in free lift passes and a “powder day” to put them to good use, and we’re talking about a quality place to get your work done.

Vail Becomes New Home Of Burton US Open

After 27 years at Vermont’s Stratton Mountain Resort, Burton is moving the US Open, the longest running snowboard comp in the world, out west to Vail Mountain Resort in Colorado. The competition’s new venue will make its debut beginning with the 31st edition of the Open, to be held February 25-March 2, 2013.

In accordance with the US Open’s big move from its home mountain of Stratton, Vail and Burton have teamed up to give the event a new feel and vibe that, while staying true to the competitive aspect of the event, aims to make the US Open experiential not only for the riders competing, but for spectators as well.

Greg Dacyshyn, Chief Creative Officer at Burton, elaborated on the new direction Burton hopes to take the US Open: “We really feel like we want to take this event to the next level and really show everyone what snowboarding is all about,” Dacyshyn said at a Burton and Vail hosted tour of the new venue that took place over Wednesday, July 25 through Friday, July 27.

Indeed, touring both the Vail Village and getting up on the mountain itself on July 26-27 to check out what Vail and Burton have brewing for the competition’s Vail debut showed no shortage of plans to revamp the event. The competition course itself will, at least for the first few years at Vail, consist of a halfpipe and slopestyle course that will neighbor one another on Vail’s Golden Peak zone.

TransWorld Business Catches up with SIA’s Kelly Davis for the ’11/12 Snowboard Season Sales #SIAdata

While most of us are ready to put a fork in the ’11/12 snowboard season, we felt it was time to take a look back at how sales stats looked as we crossed the finish line. We caught up with SIA Director of Research Kelly Davis for an in-depth look at this year’s tallies.

“Overall, snowboard equipment sales (carryover not included) were down 4% in units and down 1% in dollars sold as retailers kept prices and margins healthy despite the warm weather and lack of snow in many regions this season,” explains Davis of a season, that could have been much worse.  “In fact, the late season snow out west helped snowboard sales and participation significantly.  Remember that one in five snowboarders lives in California.”

The reverse camber trend definitely continued to drive sales as well. According to Davis, “reverse camber snowboards made up 290,000 of the 395,000 boards sold this season.  Unit sales of reverse camber boards were up 12% while normal camber board sales were down 23% in units.  In fact, average retail prices for equipment increased 3% overall in snowboard equipment but margins fell about 3%—not bad relative to some categories in the market this season.”

But as we all know, things were far from rosy for most, especially on the outerwear front. Here’s an in-depth look at this year’s sales, margins, inventory levels, and regional breakdowns as well as analysis of the trends:

CONGRATS TO TRANSWORLD CELEBRATING 30 YEARS – CHECK-IN WITH MIKE LEWIS

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

By: SIA
May 31, 2012

With TransWorld celebrating their 30 year anniversary this year, we caught up with Mike Lewis, Editor-In-Chief of TransWorld Business, to discuss his time at TW and how the industry has progressed over the years.

Mike LewisSIA: A lot of people don’t know about your unique employment history. What did you do before TransWorld?
ML: I started in the industry working in shops, going back to Wave Rave in Boulder and Polar Revolution in Vail, before deciding to get serious and get an MBA. I ran the marketing department for a large non-profit health care group before deciding that getting serious wasn’t all that fun and joined the TransWorld team full time.

SIA: How long have you been working at TransWorld?
ML: I’ve been here full time for four years, but I’ve been a regular contributor for around 11.

SIA: Give us some of TransWorld’s history highlights?
ML: Wow, there are so many highlights, but I think the biggest ones are not just documenting how fast the sports we cover are evolving, but helping them grow by pushing innovation and participation. Events like the TransWorld Snow Conference, Skate & Create, all of our awards shows, videos, and content help promote the sports and get more and more people on board every year. Seeing new people get fired up on riding is the biggest highlight for me.

The 2012 TransWorld Snow Conference‘s second day kicked off with a panel on the impacts of parks on participation and progression, followed by analysis of the season’s sales and participation data from SIA Director of Research Kelly Davis.

Below are portions of the presentations and more info on the talks. To see more coverage of the TransWorld Snow Conference, check out our wrap-up photos right here.

Sales, Fails, and Silver Linings: The State of the Industry

Kelly Davis, Director of Research, SIA

The day’s meetings got under way with a presentation by SIA Director of Research Kelly Davis, who began with a focus on the grim sales numbers from the season, following with the silver linings including increased frequency of core participants, growth in women riders, new young shreds on the slopes, and the growing diversity in the park.

Davis also highlighted the “Urban Woodsman” trend, think full beard and flannel, which was not only prevalent at the meeting, but has apparently taken hold in urban areas amongst former members of a metrosexual ilk. Axe sales (for cutting trees, not the body spray) are up 30%, and Tribeca even boasts a custom axe shop. Davis’s advice? Either move away from these co-opters and the trend or make ‘em pay to look like us!

Why Women Buy: Oakley Steps Up Its Female Focus

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

By: TransWorld Business
April 25, 2012

Women account for 80% of America’s purchasing power. More and more females are dominating their male counterparts when it comes to getting a college and post-graduate education, and many are taking their spot next to men in high ranking executive positions, becoming the bread winners and, more often than not, becoming completely financially independent. It only makes sense then, for companies to begin tapping even further into the power of women shoppers by identifying and catering to what female consumers are really looking for.

At a day exclusively dedicated to women at Oakley Headquarters earlier this month, SVP of Global Business Units Joseé Perreault summed up the company’s recent efforts succinctly: “It’s time to embrace that we have great women’s product and tell the world—it starts with that. Oakley Women’s is 10% of our total business. There’s a lot of low hanging fruit and a lot of opportunity to close the gap.”

As part of an ongoing initiative that the company has been building upon since launching its female exclusive sunglass collections and apparel back in 2005, Oakley is stepping up its women’s category retail education and marketing efforts to the next level for 2012-13, according to Perreault. Expanding on its Perform Beautifully campaign, Oakley will launch its new “Beyond Reason” mantra in Q3, featuring the likes of team athletes Gretchen Bleiler as well as Olympic track and field star Lori “Lolo” Jones. An Oakley team led by Perreault will also set out next month on a six month tour across six major US cities such as Dallas, Denver, Chicago, and New York, where the brand already has a firm stake planted in the women’s market, in order to hold retail education training seminars and events that will test which marketing and sales promotions are successful so that the brand can then implement them across their stores worldwide.

This year’s Office Booyz trip ended the season with a proper bang.  A group of North American Snowboarding Industry heads, all with desk jobs, infiltrated Blue River, British Columbia to enjoy the Powder Mecca that is  Mike Wiegele’s Heli Skiing.  Industry players, included 686 Founder Mike West, Billabong’s Andrew Marriner, the Malakye and KnowShow crews, and the entire Endeavor Snowboards office!

The terrain is endless, with more that 1.2 million acres across BC’s Cariboo and Monashee mountain ranges in play. Our group of snowboarders was rolling deep, and as the last session of the season, endless terrain and powder fields were annihilated, and of course the bar was drank dry.

Many thanks to Jeff Silcock, Marketing & Sales Manager at Mike Wiegele’s Helicopter Skiiing for organizing the trip.  Stay tuned right here on TransWorld Biz for next year’s dates.
