National Ambassador for Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month Will Offer Tips on Best Practices
Lakewood, CO (October 4, 2011) — Extreme skier Glen Plake will make a rare visit to selected ski and snowboard retail stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia in October. Plake is the ambassador for Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, a national grass roots initiative that encourages children and adults to learn skiing and/or snowboarding by taking lessons from professional instructors. Many special offers are available during January 2012 at resorts across the country.
Plake is known internationally for his ability to ski some of the world’s most extreme terrain and his roles in winter adventure movies such as “The Blizzard of Ahhs”. During his October shop tour, he will share some of his experiences, offer tips to skiers and snowboarders of all ability levels and sign autographs.
“I really like talking to people whether they’re dedicated enthusiasts or just starting out,” said Plake. “I tell them that you don’t have to be that good to have fun skiing or snowboarding but it is important to take lessons from professionals. I got my PSIA certification so I would be a little more authentic.”
His signature spiked Mohawk hairstyle has made him a highly recognizable athlete all over the world. Plake recently earned his certification as a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA). Plake, and his wife Kimberly, travel annually on their “Down Home Tour,” often unannounced, to smaller ski areas where the majority of snow sports participants first learn.
A partial schedule follows and it is subject to change:
October 9 Danzeisen and Quigley in Cherry Hill, NJ
October 11 Ski Chalet in Falls Church, VA (New Store)
October 13 Paragon Sports in New York City
October 14 Buckmans Ski & Snowboard Shop in White Hall, PA (Grand Opening)
Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month is an industry initiative organized by state and regional ski associations, the leading snow sports media outlets, rep and retailer associations, the Professional Ski Instructors of America, the American Association of Snowboard Instructors, United States Ski and Snowboard Association, SnowSports Industries America, National Ski Patrol, and the National Ski Areas Association.
