Bringing Together the Best and the Brightest for the Snowboarding Industry Conference at Mammoth Mountain, April 1-4

Snowboarding Industry ConferenceThe Snowboarding Industry Conference is just weeks away, and is promising to be another excellent meeting of the best and brightest in the industry. There’s a must-see lineup of speakers, and Mammoth Mountain is an incredible location, so now is the time to register and be a part of the discussion about snowboarding’s direction and growth. We caught up with TransWorld Business Editor-in-Chief Rob Campbell to find out more about what the conference has in store.

SIA: Tell us a little bit about the conference, its purpose, and what will happen during your time at Mammoth.

RC: It’s our annual meeting of the snowboard industry, where we bring key executives and industry transworld_1leaders together to discuss the issues that affect everyone – participation, climate change, the state of the market, to name a few. It’s a small group intentionally, because we want everyone to feel that by the end of the weekend they’ve had a conversation with just about everyone there. We also put considerable effort into making it feel like people have left their brand at the door, and we’ve come together to discuss the sport and the industry as a whole.

SIA: Your speakers include our own Research Director Kelly Davis, as well as Michael Jager and Jeff Harbaugh. What can people expect from their presentations?

RC: Of course SIA plays a huge part in the conference, and Kelly Davis’ presentation on the State of the Market sets the stage for the weekend and gives everyone a feel for where things are headed. Michael Jager, co-founder of JDK Design, is our keynote speaker. As someone who’s been involved with branding in snowboarding since the beginning, we asked him to give some thought to what would be appropriate right now. He’s bringing a great presentation about branding and how that’s evolved in the new media age. It will be of interest to manufacturers and retailers of all levels. Then we have Jeff Harbaugh, who writes the Market Watch column and public company analysis, and is always a really popular speaker. He’s been in the industry for a long time, and people really love to get this hard financial data. He has a unique background, with a foundation in finance and action sports. The q-and-a after his presentation is a lot of people’s favorite thing; they love to hear his opinions and where he thinks things are headed.

SIA: What do you think are some other benefits of attending the conference?

Mammoth Mountain InnRC: One thing people really like is the networking and the camaraderie that goes along with it. Some of the best discussions go down outside of the conference room; it might sound a bit clichéd, but a lot of things really do get thought up sharing ideas on the chairlift or at the bar. When we leave, people are so excited, and we all come away feeling bigger than the individual brands. Plus, Mammoth has gotten 60 inches of new snow in the past 2 weeks, so the conditions are great. We have our opening night dinner at Parallax, up the gondola at 9600’, which is really cool, and everyone is staying at the Mammoth Mountain Inn, which is a really nice facility with a great central location. All in all, it’s a great opportunity to come together to work on the issues, and it’s also a damn good time!
