The 2012/2013 snow sports season was a recovery year that started out slow and finished out strong with snow falling well into the spring in various parts of the country. $3.4B later with record sales in January 2013, the industry still has a lot of questions. In an effort to answer them, SIA research has released the third annual State of the Industry Video as well as category-specific videos for alpine skiing, Nordic skiing and snowboarding.

2013 SIA State of the Industry from SnowSports Industries America on Vimeo.

The State of the Industry Video tells how the 2012/13 season ended with:

  • A participation increase of 11 percent over 2011/12
  • $1.46 billion in apparel sales—a record high for the industry
  • Alpine equipment retail sales at a five-season high
  • The average snow sports shop selling more alpine boots than anything else

Category-specific State of the Industry Videos illustrate key 2013 industry research findings for alpineNordic and snowboard. Watch them all at

Content for the State of the Industry Videos was pulled from the 2013 Snow Sports Market Intelligence Report and 2013 Snow Sports Participant Study, which are wide-ranging reports covering both sales and participation from the 2012/2013 season. SIA also used data from Snow Sports Insiders surveys and Snow Sports Consumer Profiles to help the industry visualize the ups and the downs of last season and prepare for the next.
