A series of “TED” type talks at this year’s Mountain Travel Symposium included a number of diverse speakers, each giving a talk of about 10 minutes or so about their field of expertise. Auden Schendler, author of “Getting Green Done,” VP of sustainability for Aspen Skiing Company, and a POW Board Member, gave a talk at the MTS and expanded on his points in an article about the Summit Book Talks in Colorado’s Summit Daily. National Ski Areas Association and SnowSports Industries America Boards of Directors Meet in Savannah
Last week, the boards of directors for NSAA and SIA held a joint meeting in Savannah where they covered snow sports industry reviewed points of mutual interest about the snow sports industry. Both associations gave their own recognition awards to Bill Marolt, outgoing president and CEO of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, and honored his years of service and retirement in their joint meeting. Tiger Shaw, the new president and CEO of USSA, continued the meeting with an overview of the future of U.S. ski and snowboard athletics. Following that, Mary Jo Tarallo, Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month executive director, along with  Ralene Davis, director of marketing at Ski Utah, reviewed the 2014 success of Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month and Bring a Friend and plans for their 2015 initiatives, the research directors of SIA and NSAA, Kelly Davis and Nate Fristoe, respectively, updated the boards on consumer research plans for the coming season. NSAA President Michael Berry and SIA President David Ingemie closed the meeting reviewing both organizations’ plans for supporting the evolving needs of retailers by continuing to partner with National Ski and Snowboard Retailers Association.

‘Hearty New Englanders’ Look To Grow Snow Sports
An initiative to grow snow sports – primarily in New England – was discussed at last fall’s ski show and last week, a group of about 45 representatives from all aspects of the snow sports industry got together at Gunstock Resort, NH, to plan a way to move the effort forward. First proposed by ski show producer and all-around snow sport promoter Bernie Wiechsel, the meeting was designed to generate ideas in a brainstorming session. Board Members selected at the meeting include SIA’s own Ed Wray, Tom Horrocks of, retailer Ray Stenson from Country Ski and Sport, headquartered in Quincy, MA, Bill Quigley from Gunstock Resort, and Kyle Lewis from the Vermont Ski Areas Association.

“I Am Pro Snow” – Q&A with SIA Supporting Member The Climate Reality Project
The Climate Reality Project is tackling climate change from many different angles, including by working directly with the snow sports community. SIA had a few minutes with Victoria Simarano, senior campaigns and partnerships advisor at The Climate Reality Project, to learn more about what industry professional are doing to support the organization’s eco-mission.

New U.S. Forest Service Guidelines
The U.S. Forest Service just released its directives for ski areas to expand use and infrastructure on federal lands for non-winter operations.  There are currently 122 ski areas on approximately 180,000 acres of forest service land, and according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture news release, “early estimates by the agency indicate that expanding ski area recreation activities will increase by 600,000 the number of summer visits on national forests.” The new guidelines, which are to take effect immediately, will clearly help mountain communities increase their levels of summer tourism.

Protect Our WintersProtect Our Winters Starts Colorado Initiative
Protect Our Winters (POW) announced that they’ve launched their first major regional initiative, POW//Colorado to unite the Colorado winter sports community against climate change.

Of all the US states with winter tourism economies, Colorado has the most to lose with inconsistent winters, with almost 40,000 jobs and $1.2 billion in salaries at stake.

word_2Vermont Olympic Athletes Urge for Action on Carbon Tax to Stem Climate Emissions
Four of Vermont’s winter Olympic athletes are speaking out on the impact of climate change sports and the need for global policies to stem the threat. Nordic skiers Liz Stephen and Ida Sargent and biathletes Susan Dunklee and Hannah Dreissigacker joined Vermont Natural Resources Council Energy Program Director Johanna Miller to share the message that climate change is a personal issue for the athletes because their competitive careers are at stake.
